The Door That Should Never Open

Chapter 1

The Door That Should Never Open

THE WHISPERING HOUSE OF BLACKWOOD HOLLOW · August 6, 2026

The first thing Elena Ward noticed about Blackwood Hollow was that the birds were silent.

Not fewer.

Not hidden.

Silent.

The forest surrounding the forgotten village was thick and endless, filled with ancient trees whose branches twisted together like the fingers of something sleeping beneath the earth.

The road leading into the village had not appeared on any modern map.

The signs were broken.

The houses were empty.

And every window looked as if someone had been standing behind it, watching her arrival.

Elena tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

She had investigated haunted places before.

Abandoned hospitals.

Old prisons.

Forgotten towns.

She had written articles about strange disappearances and unexplained events.

People called her brave.

Some called her foolish.

But Elena knew the truth.

She wasn’t brave.

She was searching.

Searching for answers that had haunted her for fifteen years.

Searching for her brother.

The letter was still inside her coat pocket.

She had read it hundreds of times since receiving it.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was faded.

But she knew those words.

She knew that handwriting.

Because it belonged to someone who had been missing for fifteen years.

Her younger brother.

Lucas Ward.

The letter contained only one sentence.

“I am still inside the house. Please don’t let it remember you.”

No address.

No explanation.

No signature.

Only those terrifying words.

But Elena knew exactly what house Lucas meant.

Everyone in Blackwood Hollow knew.

Blackwood House.

The abandoned mansion at the edge of the forest.

The place where Lucas disappeared.

Fifteen years ago…

Elena was twenty years old.

Lucas was twelve.

They had come to Blackwood Hollow with their parents after their father accepted a temporary job nearby.

The village was strange from the beginning.

People avoided eye contact.

Children were not allowed to play near the forest.

And every person repeated the same warning.

“Never go near Blackwood House after sunset.”

Of course, Lucas wanted to know why.

He was curious.

Fearless.

Always searching for adventures.

Elena remembered him saying:

“People only create scary stories when they want to hide something.”

She laughed at the time.

She wished she hadn’t.

The day Lucas disappeared began like any other.

Rain covered the village.

The electricity went out.

The entire town became dark.

Elena remembered waking up in the middle of the night.

She heard footsteps.

Lucas.

She followed the sound.

Downstairs.

Through the front door.

Into the rain.

She saw him standing at the end of the road.

Looking toward the forest.

“Lucas!”

He turned.

But he wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing behind him.

A tall figure.

A shadow.

Watching.

Elena ran toward him.

But lightning flashed.

And when the darkness returned…

Lucas was gone.

The police searched for weeks.

Nothing.

No footprints.

No evidence.

No explanation.

The village blamed the forest.

They blamed the house.

And eventually…

Everyone left.

Now Elena was back.

And this time, she wasn’t leaving without answers.

The car stopped in front of the old village entrance.

A wooden sign hung crookedly.

BLACKWOOD HOLLOW

Below it, someone had carved words into the wood.

Fresh scratches.

Almost like they had been written recently.

“DON’T WAKE THE HOUSE.”

Elena stared at the message.

Her first instinct was to leave.

Her second was curiosity.

The second won.

It always did.

A sound came from behind her.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Elena turned quickly.

A man stood beside an old police vehicle.

He looked around fifty.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that carried years of regret.

“Who are you?”

The man studied her.

Then looked at the car.

Then at her face.

“You look like your mother.”

Elena froze.

“How do you know my mother?”

The man didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“My name is Daniel Cross.”

Her expression changed.

The name was familiar.

“Former police officer?”

He nodded.

“You remember.”

“You were the officer who investigated my brother’s disappearance.”

Daniel looked away.

“I was.”

“And you never found him.”

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

Almost painful.

Elena stepped closer.

“Did you know about the house?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Everyone knew.”

“Then why did nobody search there?”

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because people who entered Blackwood House didn’t come back the same.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means…”

He looked toward the forest.

“The house doesn’t take your body first.”

Elena felt a chill.

“What does it take?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Your memories.”

The wind suddenly became colder.

The trees moved.

But there was no breeze.

Elena looked toward the forest.

Between the trees…

Something moved.

A figure.

Watching.

She blinked.

It was gone.

“Come with me,” Daniel said.

“Where?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“I didn’t come here to be safe.”

“I know.”

His voice became serious.

“That’s exactly why I’m worried.”

They walked toward the center of the village.

Most buildings were abandoned.

But one house still had lights.

An old woman stood outside.

Waiting.

As if she knew Elena was coming.

Daniel stopped.

“Don’t speak to her.”

“Why?”

“Because she knows things she shouldn’t.”

The old woman smiled.

“Elena Ward.”

Elena froze.

She had not introduced herself.

The woman continued.

“Lucas was right.”

Her heart stopped.

“What did you say?”

The woman’s smile disappeared.

“He said you would return.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mara, stop.”

The old woman ignored him.

She looked at Elena.

“Did he send you the letter?”

Elena couldn’t speak.

Mara whispered:

“The house is awake again.”

That night, Elena stayed in the old village hotel.

Or what remained of it.

She couldn’t sleep.

Every sound made her open her eyes.

The wind.

The floorboards.

The distant noises from the forest.

Then…

At exactly 3:17 AM…

Someone knocked on her door.

Three slow knocks.

Elena sat up.

Her heart raced.

“Daniel?”

No answer.

Another knock.

Slow.

Heavy.

She walked toward the door.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then a voice whispered from the other side.

A voice she hadn’t heard in fifteen years.

A voice she would recognize anywhere.

“Elena…”

Her blood turned cold.

“Lucas?”

The voice whispered again.

“Don’t open the door.”

She froze.

Because the voice was coming from outside.

But another voice came from behind her.

From inside the room.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Elena slowly turned.

The closet door was open.

It had been closed before.

Inside the darkness…

Something was standing.

Something tall.

Something impossible.

Then it spoke.

Using Lucas’s voice.

“You came back.”

The lights went out.

And in the darkness…

Elena heard the sound of someone smiling.
