The Voices Beneath Blackwood House

Chapter 2

The Voices Beneath Blackwood House

THE WHISPERING HOUSE OF BLACKWOOD HOLLOW · August 6, 2026

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But those few seconds felt like an entire lifetime.

Elena stood frozen in the center of the room, unable to breathe.

The closet door remained open.

The darkness inside it looked deeper than it should have been.

A normal closet had walls.

A floor.

A back.

But this one seemed endless.

Like a doorway leading somewhere it was never meant to lead.

Then the lights returned.

The room was empty.

The closet door was closed.

And there was nothing.

No shadow.

No figure.

No sign that anything had happened.

Only Elena’s own terrified reflection staring back at her from the mirror.

She didn’t sleep again.

Not for even a minute.

She sat on the edge of the bed until morning, holding Lucas’s letter in her hands.

Her fingers trembled.

The words seemed different now.

More frightening.

I am still inside the house.

Before tonight, Elena thought Lucas meant Blackwood House.

Now she wondered something worse.

What if he meant something else?

What if he meant the house was inside him?

At sunrise, Elena left the hotel.

She needed answers.

The first person she searched for was Daniel Cross.

She found him standing outside the abandoned police station, looking through old files.

He looked exhausted.

As if he had spent the entire night awake too.

When he saw Elena approaching, his expression changed.

“You saw something.”

It wasn’t a question.

Elena stopped.

“How did you know?”

Daniel closed the file in his hand.

“Because everyone who stays in Blackwood Hollow long enough eventually does.”

She stared at him.

“Something was in my room.”

Daniel looked away.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Elena explained everything.

The voice.

The closet.

The words.

When she finished, Daniel remained silent.

Finally, he said:

“It used Lucas’s voice.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“You know about that?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That is how the house works.”

“What is it?”

Daniel looked toward the forest.

Nobody spoke about Blackwood House during daylight.

But even in the morning sun, it seemed to watch them.

“The house doesn’t create voices.”

“Then what does it do?”

“It remembers them.”

Elena crossed her arms.

“That makes no sense.”

“I wish it didn’t.”

Daniel opened an old police file.

Inside were photographs.

Missing people.

Dozens of them.

Dates going back nearly a century.

Elena looked through them.

“What am I looking at?”

“Everyone who disappeared near Blackwood House.”

She turned the pages.

Men.

Women.

Children.

Different years.

Different faces.

Same location.

“Why wasn’t this public?”

“Because the town wanted to survive.”

“By pretending nothing happened?”

“By staying away.”

Daniel pointed to one photograph.

A young girl.

Maybe fifteen years old.

“Her name was Clara Bell.”

“What happened to her?”

“She entered the house in 1978.”

“And?”

“She returned three days later.”

Elena looked confused.

“Then she wasn’t missing.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“She wasn’t.”

“She came back.”

He paused.

“But something came back with her.”

“What do you mean?”

“Clara couldn’t remember anything.”

“Not her parents.”

“Not her friends.”

“Not even her own name.”

Elena felt a chill.

“She lost her memory?”

Daniel nodded.

“But that wasn’t the worst part.”

“What was?”

“Every night at exactly midnight, she would write letters.”

“To who?”

Daniel looked at her.

“To people who disappeared years before she was born.”

A cold silence filled the room.

Elena looked again toward the forest.

The trees seemed closer now.

“What happened to Clara?”

Daniel closed the file.

“She disappeared again.”

“Back to the house?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Nobody knows.”

Elena looked at him.

“You believe the house is alive.”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“I believe there are things in this world we don’t understand.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only honest one I have.”

That afternoon, Elena and Daniel walked toward Blackwood House.

The closer they got, the colder the air became.

The forest around them was strangely quiet.

No insects.

No birds.

No animals.

Only their footsteps.

Crunching against the dead leaves.

After twenty minutes, they saw it.

The mansion.

Blackwood House.

It stood beyond the trees like something abandoned by time.

The building was enormous.

Three floors.

Broken windows.

Dark walls covered with vines.

The roof was damaged.

Yet somehow…

The house looked untouched.

Like it had been waiting.

Elena stopped.

Her heart started beating faster.

“This is where Lucas disappeared.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“You came here that night.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

He looked at the house.

“I heard Lucas calling for help.”

Elena froze.

“You heard him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you save him?”

The question came out harsher than she intended.

Daniel accepted it.

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

He swallowed.

“I opened the door.”

“And?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The house was empty.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

“I heard Lucas’s voice coming from upstairs.”

“So you went upstairs.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s face became pale.

“Because while I was standing at the entrance…”

“I heard Lucas’s voice behind me.”

Elena felt a wave of fear.

“Behind you?”

Daniel nodded.

“The voice upstairs said my name.”

“The voice behind me said…”

He stopped.

“What?”

Daniel looked directly at the house.

“It said, ‘Daniel, don’t let it learn your voice.'”

The front door of Blackwood House slowly opened.

Neither of them touched it.

Neither moved.

The darkness inside waited.

Elena whispered:

“Did you open that door?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

A voice came from inside the house.

Soft.

Familiar.

Painfully familiar.

“Elena.”

Her entire body froze.

Lucas.

Her brother’s voice.

Coming from inside.

“Elena, please.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“That’s him.”

“No.”

“It sounds like him.”

“That’s the point.”

The voice came again.

“Elena…”

“I know you’re there.”

Tears filled her eyes.

Because nobody else knew how Lucas used to say her name.

Nobody else knew the exact sadness in his voice.

Nobody else could copy that.

Could they?

The door opened wider.

Inside was darkness.

Then something happened.

The house changed.

The hallway inside became longer.

Impossible.

A normal hallway could not stretch like that.

But Blackwood House was not normal.

Elena stepped forward.

Daniel pulled her back.

“Don’t.”

“My brother is in there.”

“We don’t know that.”

She looked at him.

“What if he is?”

Daniel had no answer.

Because that was the question that destroyed everyone who came here.

What if?

They entered.

The moment Elena crossed the doorway…

The door closed behind them.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Like a heartbeat.

Inside, the house was colder than outside.

The walls were covered with old paintings.

But something was wrong.

Elena looked closer.

Every painting showed people standing in front of the house.

Families.

Visitors.

Strangers.

And every person in the paintings had the same expression.

Fear.

Daniel moved toward a hallway.

“We find Lucas quickly and leave.”

Elena nodded.

But then she noticed something.

A painting at the end of the hall.

A family portrait.

Her family.

Her parents.

Lucas.

And her.

Her breath stopped.

The painting was old.

Very old.

Impossible.

She stepped closer.

At the bottom of the painting was a date.

1896

Her blood ran cold.

“Daniel…”

He looked.

And froze.

Because the painting wasn’t just of her family.

There was another person standing behind them.

A tall shadow.

With a hand resting on Lucas’s shoulder.

The lights flickered.

A whisper moved through the hallway.

Not one voice.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

All speaking at once.

“Welcome back, Elena.”

Daniel grabbed her hand.

“We need to leave.”

But the front door was gone.

Where the entrance had been…

There was only a wall.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Elena looked upward.

A figure appeared at the top of the staircase.

A boy.

Standing in the darkness.

Her heart stopped.

“Lucas?”

The figure lifted its head.

For a moment, she saw her brother.

Then the lights flickered.

And the face changed.

The thing smiled.

Using Lucas’s voice, it whispered:

“Finally…”

“You came inside.”
