The Last Door in the Universe

Chapter 5

The Last Door in the Universe

THE OCEAN BETWEEN THE STAR · August 21, 2026

The first star disappeared.

Mira watched it vanish through the collapsing Garden of Echoes.

One moment it was there.

A tiny golden light among millions.

The next—

Nothing.

The darkness spread across the sky like ink dropped into water.

Eren stood frozen.

His older self smiled.

“You finally made it this far.”

Mira tightened her grip on Eren’s hand.

“Who are you?”

The older Eren looked at her.

“I’m what happens when you fail.”

Eren stepped forward.

“No.”

The older version laughed.

“You’ve said that before.”

Mira looked between them.

“You’re from the future?”

“Yes.”

“How far?”

The older Eren glanced toward the dying garden.

“Far enough to know how this ends.”

“Then tell us.”

He smiled.

“You won’t like the answer.”

Mira stepped closer.

“I don’t care.”

“You should.”

He raised his hand.

The garden froze.

Every falling leaf stopped in the air.

Every star became motionless.

Even Eren couldn’t move.

Only Mira remained free.

The older Eren looked at her.

“You are different this time.”

Mira’s heart raced.

“Why?”

“Because you remember him.”

She looked at Eren.

“That’s the difference?”

“Yes.”

The older Eren walked toward her.

“In the previous thirty-six lives, you always forgot.”

“Who made me forget?”

“You did.”

Mira stared.

“What?”

“You chose to forget.”

The older Eren touched the silver tree.

A memory appeared.

Mira saw herself standing beneath the tree in another lifetime.

She was older.

Eren stood beside her.

The universe was burning.

Stars were collapsing.

Planets were disappearing.

Mira was crying.

“We can’t save everyone.”

Eren held her hands.

“Then save yourself.”

“No.”

“You have to choose.”

Mira looked at him.

“I choose you.”

The memory changed.

The Star Engine appeared.

Mira stepped toward it.

The older Eren watched.

“She made the choice.”

Mira whispered:

“What choice?”

“To reset the universe.”

The garden went silent.

Mira stared at him.

“You’re saying I destroyed everything?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You sacrificed everything.”

“Why?”

“Because the Void had already won.”

Mira looked at Eren.

“And him?”

The older Eren’s eyes became sad.

“You erased his memory so he wouldn’t remember dying.”

Mira covered her mouth.

“No…”

“You saved him.”

“But he forgot me.”

“Yes.”

“And I forgot him.”

“Yes.”

“Thirty-six times?”

“Yes.”

The older Eren smiled sadly.

“And every time, you found each other again.”

The frozen world suddenly moved.

Eren rushed forward.

His sword struck his older self.

CLANG!

The impact shook the garden.

The older Eren blocked the attack.

“You still fight exactly the same.”

Eren attacked again.

“You aren’t me.”

The older Eren smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Their weapons collided again.

Mira watched helplessly.

Then she noticed Liora.

The little girl was standing beside the black door.

She was crying.

“Mira…”

Mira ran toward her.

“What happened?”

Liora pointed toward the door.

“It wants to open.”

“What is behind it?”

“The Void.”

Mira looked at the door.

A dark line appeared across its surface.

“Then we’ll close it.”

Liora shook her head.

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the door is made from your memories.”

Mira froze.

“What?”

Liora touched the door.

“Every time you forget Eren, another piece of the door is created.”

Mira looked at the black surface.

Images appeared across it.

Mira and Eren.

Their first meeting.

Their first goodbye.

Their first kiss.

Their final moments.

Thirty-six lives.

Thirty-six memories.

All trapped inside the door.

Mira whispered:

“So the door exists because we keep forgetting.”

Liora nodded.

“And the Void uses those forgotten memories to enter the universe.”

Mira understood.

The Void wasn’t attacking planets.

It was attacking memories.

It wanted humanity to forget itself.

If everyone forgot who they were—

There would be nothing left to save.

Eren was thrown across the garden.

He landed beside Mira.

His older self walked toward them.

“You can’t defeat me.”

Eren struggled to stand.

“Why?”

“Because I already know every move you’ll make.”

The older Eren looked at Mira.

“And I know what she will choose.”

Mira stood.

“What?”

He smiled.

“She will choose the universe.”

Mira stared at him.

“What if I don’t?”

“You will.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s who you are.”

Mira looked at Eren.

He was bleeding.

But he was smiling.

“Mira.”

She knelt beside him.

“Are you okay?”

“I’ve been worse.”

She laughed through her tears.

“You’re terrible at comforting people.”

“I know.”

He took her hand.

“Don’t listen to him.”

“I don’t know what to do.”

“Yes, you do.”

“How?”

“You’ve known since the beginning.”

Mira looked at him.

“What?”

“You don’t have to choose between me and the universe.”

She stared.

Eren smiled.

“We create a third choice.”

Mira stood.

The Star Engine began responding.

The silver tree’s dying branches started glowing again.

The older Eren stepped backward.

“What are you doing?”

Mira looked at him.

“Changing the ending.”

“You can’t.”

“Maybe.”

She raised her hand.

“But I’ve never tried.”

Every forgotten memory in the garden began floating toward her.

One by one.

Life after life.

Mira remembered everything.

Every version of Eren.

Every version of herself.

Every goodbye.

Every promise.

Every time they found each other.

Every time they lost each other.

She remembered all of it.

And she didn’t forget.

The black door began cracking.

The older Eren screamed:

“STOP!”

Mira continued.

“You said I always choose the universe.”

She looked at him.

“But you forgot something.”

“What?”

“I am part of the universe too.”

Golden light exploded from her.

The door began breaking.

The Void screamed from behind it.

Liora reached for Mira.

“Mira!”

Mira grabbed her hand.

“You’re coming with us.”

Liora stared.

“But I’m the key.”

“Then we’ll find a different lock.”

The older Eren dropped his weapon.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“Maybe not.”

“You’ll destroy the Star Engine.”

“Then I’ll destroy it.”

“You’ll lose your memories.”

“Then I’ll remember them again.”

“You’ll lose him.”

Mira looked at Eren.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Not this time.”

The black door shattered.

A wave of darkness rushed toward them.

Eren stepped beside Mira.

Together they raised their hands.

The Star Engine released one final burst of light.

The darkness stopped.

Then—

BOOM.

The Garden of Echoes disappeared.

Mira opened her eyes.

She was floating in space.

Eren was beside her.

Liora was holding his hand.

The silver tree was gone.

The mysterious woman was gone.

The Garden was gone.

Only stars remained.

Thousands of them.

Millions.

But something was wrong.

Eren looked toward Earth.

Half of its stars had disappeared.

“How long?”

Mira asked.

Eren checked his broken watch.

“Eleven hours.”

“Until what?”

He looked at her.

“The final collapse.”

Mira’s heart sank.

“Can we stop it?”

Eren looked toward the distant darkness.

“Yes.”

“How?”

He pointed toward the center of the universe.

A giant blue planet floated there.

It was surrounded by an ocean of stars.

“Nerith.”

Mira stared.

“We’re going back?”

Eren nodded.

“That’s where the first Star Engine was created.”

“And the last door?”

“It’s beneath the ocean.”

Liora suddenly spoke.

“And someone is already there.”

Mira looked at her.

“Who?”

Liora’s eyes turned silver.

“Your mother.”

Mira stopped breathing.

“My mother is alive?”

Liora nodded.

“But she isn’t waiting for you.”

A chill passed through Mira.

“Then what is she doing?”

Liora looked toward the dark universe.

“She’s waiting for the Void.”

A spacecraft appeared in the distance.

Old.

Damaged.

But unmistakable.

The Aurora.

The ship that had disappeared seventeen years ago.

Its lights turned on one by one.

Then a transmission reached Mira.

A woman’s voice.

Soft.

Familiar.

Her mother’s voice.

“Mira, if you can hear me…”

Mira’s eyes filled with tears.

The transmission continued.

“…do not come to Nerith.”

Static.

Then her mother whispered:

“Your father is still alive.”

Mira froze.

Eren looked at her.

The transmission ended.

Then another message appeared.

Not from her mother.

From the Void.

THE LAST DOOR IS OPEN.

The universe went completely dark.

And far beyond the stars, something enormous began to wake.
