The Ocean Between the Stars
THE OCEAN BETWEEN THE STAR · August 21, 2026
The universe went dark.
Not night.
Not an eclipse.
Darkness.
Every star disappeared at once.
Mira floated inside the silent spacecraft, staring through the window.
Nothing existed beyond the glass.
No planets.
No galaxies.
No distant lights.
Only the reflection of her own frightened face.
Then Eren spoke.
“Mira.”
She turned.
“What?”
He pointed ahead.
A tiny blue light had appeared in the darkness.
Then another.
Then thousands.
The lights formed a path.
A path leading toward Nerith.
Mira whispered:
“The ocean.”
Eren nodded.
“The last door is opening.”
The Aurora drifted toward them.
It looked exactly as it had in the old photographs.
The same silver hull.
The same broken wings.
The same name painted across its side.
But it had been missing for seventeen years.
Mira stared.
“How is it still here?”
Eren shook his head.
“Time doesn’t work normally on Nerith.”
The Aurora opened its docking gate.
Liora suddenly grabbed Mira’s hand.
“Don’t go inside.”
Mira looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because the ship remembers.”
Eren looked at Liora.
“Remember what?”
She whispered:
“Everything that happened.”
They entered the Aurora.
The corridors were dark.
Dust floated through the air.
Old emergency lights flickered.
Mira walked slowly.
“This is where you disappeared.”
Eren nodded.
“I remember.”
They reached the cockpit.
Everything was exactly as it had been seventeen years ago.
A cup of coffee sat beside the pilot’s seat.
A notebook remained open.
The final page contained one sentence:
THE OCEAN IS NOT WATER.
Mira touched the page.
“What does that mean?”
Eren stared at it.
“I don’t know.”
Then the cockpit lights turned on.
A recording began playing.
Eren’s younger voice filled the room.
“Day ninety-three. We have discovered something beneath Nerith’s ocean.”
The recording crackled.
“It isn’t an ocean.”
A pause.
“It’s a memory.”
Mira looked at Eren.
The recording continued.
“The entire planet is made from memories collected across thousands of civilizations.”
Another pause.
Then Eren’s younger voice became frightened.
“Someone built it.”
The recording stopped.
A second recording started automatically.
This time, a woman’s voice.
Mira’s mother.
“If you’re hearing this, Mira, then I failed.”
Mira’s eyes filled with tears.
Her mother continued.
“Nerith was never a planet.”
The cockpit became silent.
“It is a machine.”
A massive sound shook the spacecraft.
The floor tilted.
Mira grabbed the console.
“What was that?”
Eren looked outside.
The blue ocean had risen into the sky.
It was surrounding Nerith.
Like a gigantic sphere of water and stars.
Liora whispered:
“The door.”
Mira looked at her.
“Where?”
Liora pointed downward.
“Under us.”
The floor beneath their feet became transparent.
Far below was a giant circular structure.
A door.
Thousands of kilometers wide.
Mira stared.
“That can’t be a door.”
Eren shook his head.
“It is.”
The door began opening.
Darkness poured through the gap.
Then a voice filled the universe.
“MIRA.”
She recognized it.
The Void.
But this time, there was another voice beneath it.
Her mother’s.
“Don’t listen.”
Mira looked toward the sky.
“Mom?”
The voice returned.
“Mira, I am here.”
A golden light appeared inside the ocean.
A woman stood there.
Golden hair.
White dress.
Older than the memory.
But unmistakably her mother.
Mira couldn’t move.
“Mom…”
Her mother smiled.
“My little star.”
Mira burst into tears.
She reached toward her.
“You’re alive.”
“For now.”
Mira ran toward the edge of the ship.
Her mother raised one hand.
“Don’t come closer.”
“Why?”
“Because the ocean isn’t holding me.”
Mira froze.
“Then what is?”
Her mother looked behind her.
A massive black shape moved beneath the water.
“The Void.”
Eren stepped beside Mira.
“Why did it keep you alive?”
Her mother looked at him.
“Because it needed me.”
“For what?”
“To build the last door.”
Mira shook her head.
“You built it?”
Her mother nodded.
“I helped create Nerith.”
“Why?”
“To give humanity a place to store its memories.”
She looked at the ocean.
“Every civilization eventually discovers the same problem.”
“What?”
“Memory disappears.”
Her mother continued:
“People die. Worlds vanish. Languages disappear. Entire civilizations become dust.”
“So you created Nerith.”
“Yes.”
“A place where memories could survive.”
“Yes.”
Mira looked at the black shape.
“Then the Void corrupted it.”
Her mother nodded.
“It learned that memories were more powerful than matter.”
“Why?”
“Because if you control someone’s memories…”
She looked at Mira.
“…you control who they believe they are.”
The Void rose from the ocean.
It was larger than anything Mira had ever seen.
A shape made of darkness and stars.
Its voice shook the spacecraft.
“I ONLY WANT TO REMEMBER.”
Mira stared.
“You’ve destroyed worlds.”
“BECAUSE THEY FORGOT ME.”
The creature opened thousands of eyes.
“I WAS THE FIRST MEMORY.”
Eren stepped forward.
“You’re lying.”
“AM I?”
Images appeared across the sky.
Ancient civilizations.
Alien worlds.
Millions of beings.
All remembering the same thing.
A darkness.
A lonely consciousness.
Something that existed before stars.
Before planets.
Before humanity.
The Void.
Mira understood.
It wasn’t born evil.
It was forgotten.
Every civilization that created memories had eventually forgotten the first one.
And the forgotten thing became angry.
Her mother whispered:
“It doesn’t want to destroy the universe.”
Mira looked at her.
“Then what does it want?”
“To be remembered.”
The Void reached toward Mira.
Eren grabbed her.
“Stay back!”
Mira shook her head.
“Wait.”
She looked at the creature.
“You don’t want to destroy us.”
The Void stopped.
“You want someone to remember you.”
Silence.
Then:
“YES.”
Mira stepped forward.
Eren grabbed her wrist.
“Mira.”
She looked at him.
“It’s been alone for longer than we can imagine.”
“And?”
“Maybe we don’t have to kill it.”
Her mother smiled.
“That was always the answer.”
Mira looked at the Void.
“I remember you.”
The creature became still.
“I remember the first darkness.”
The stars inside it began glowing.
“You were here before us.”
The Void whispered:
“REMEMBER ME.”
“I will.”
The final door began closing.
The darkness screamed.
But this time, it wasn’t angry.
It sounded relieved.
The black creature slowly transformed.
Darkness became light.
Stars appeared inside its body.
Then it became a giant silver ocean.
The last door closed.
And Nerith began changing.
The planet’s blue surface transformed into green forests.
The floating ocean became clouds.
The dead world became alive.
Mira looked at her mother.
“Come home.”
Her mother smiled sadly.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Someone has to remain here.”
Mira shook her head.
“No.”
“I’ve spent seventeen years keeping the door closed.”
“You don’t have to anymore.”
Her mother looked toward the sky.
The stars were returning.
One by one.
“You did it.”
Mira’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then come with us.”
Her mother smiled.
“I’ve already spent too much time in memories.”
She touched Mira’s cheek.
“Now you have to live.”
Mira hugged her.
For a moment, the universe seemed peaceful.
Then her mother whispered:
“I am proud of you.”
She slowly disappeared into golden light.
Mira cried.
Eren stood behind her.
He didn’t speak.
He simply held her.
Hours later, Luna Blue left Nerith.
Mira sat beside Eren in the cockpit.
Liora slept peacefully behind them.
The stars stretched across the window.
For the first time, they looked ordinary.
Beautiful.
Real.
Mira leaned against Eren’s shoulder.
“So…”
He smiled.
“So?”
“What happens now?”
“We go home.”
“After seventeen years?”
“For you, it was a few days.”
“For you?”
He looked at her.
“For me, it was a lifetime.”
Mira smiled.
“Then let’s make the next one longer.”
Eren took her hand.
“I’d like that.”
The spacecraft accelerated.
Behind them, Nerith became a tiny blue light.
Ahead was Earth.
A new sunrise was waiting.
Mira looked at the stars.
She finally understood something her mother had once told her.
Stars did not disappear.
They became memories.
And memories did not have to be prisons.
Sometimes—
They were promises.
Sometimes—
They were bridges.
And sometimes—
They were the reason two people found each other again.
Eren looked at her.
“Mira?”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember our first promise?”
She smiled.
“I won’t forget it.”
“What was it?”
She looked into his eyes.
“You promised you wouldn’t leave me.”
Eren smiled.
“And?”
Mira intertwined her fingers with his.
“This time, I’m making the promise too.”
The spacecraft disappeared into the golden light of Earth.
Behind them, millions of stars began shining.
And among them was one small blue star.
The same color as Nerith.
The same color as the ocean between the stars.
