The Last Secret

Chapter 5

The Last Secret

WHEN THE STARS REMEMBERED US · August 18, 2026

For the first time in years, Noah slept peacefully.

The case against Adrian was finally moving forward.

The evidence from the station had been handed to Detective Marcus Hale, and the authorities were investigating everyone connected to Adrian’s financial network.

For Noah, it felt like a door had finally closed.

But Amelia knew something was still wrong.

Noah had been quiet since the night they found his father’s letter.

Not sad.

Not afraid.

Just distant.

They were sitting at a small café near the harbor when Amelia finally asked.

“What are you thinking about?”

Noah looked up from his coffee.

“Nothing.”

She smiled.

“You’ve always been terrible at lying.”

He laughed softly.

“Maybe I was thinking about my father.”

“Do you miss him?”

“Every day.”

Amelia reached across the table and held his hand.

“I’m glad you know the truth now.”

“So am I.”

He looked at her.

“There’s still something I don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Claire.”

Amelia’s expression changed.

“The letter said she helped my father.”

“Yes.”

“But why did she disappear?”

“I don’t know.”

Noah looked toward the window.

“I need to find her.”

That afternoon, Noah received a message.

Unknown: Come to the old lighthouse alone.

Below it was an address.

Noah immediately recognized it.

The old lighthouse stood at the far end of the coast.

It had been abandoned for years.

He showed Amelia the message.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“You just said you didn’t want to lose me again.”

“I don’t.”

“Then don’t leave me behind.”

Noah sighed.

“Fine.”

They drove toward the lighthouse.

The sky was cloudy.

The sea was rough.

When they arrived, the lighthouse door was already open.

Inside, the air smelled of salt and dust.

“Hello?” Noah called.

A woman’s voice answered.

“You’re late.”

Amelia looked at Noah.

A woman stepped from the shadows.

Claire.

She looked older than Amelia expected.

Her face was tired.

But her eyes were kind.

Noah stared at her.

“Claire.”

She nodded.

“I knew you would come.”

“Why did you disappear?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Adrian?”

“Of everyone.”

She looked at Amelia.

“And especially of what would happen if he discovered you.”

Noah stepped closer.

“You sent money to my father.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me to.”

“What was it for?”

Claire took a deep breath.

“To protect you.”

Noah’s eyes filled with confusion.

“My father told you to make it look like he had betrayed me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian was watching everything.”

Claire looked at the sea.

“Your father knew he was going to die.”

Amelia’s heart tightened.

“He knew?”

Claire nodded.

“Adrian had threatened him.”

Noah closed his eyes.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because he wanted you to leave.”

“And he asked you to help?”

“Yes.”

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out another envelope.

“This was supposed to be given to you when the case was over.”

Noah took it.

His hands trembled.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My son,

If you’re reading this, then the truth has finally come out.

Noah’s eyes blurred with tears.

I know you will blame yourself. Don’t. None of this was your fault.

He continued reading.

I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people. But the greatest thing I ever did was love you enough to let you go.

Noah wiped his eyes.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

There is one thing I need you to know.

Amelia was never in danger because of you.

Noah froze.

He looked at Claire.

“What?”

Claire nodded.

“Your father wanted you to believe she was in danger.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew you wouldn’t leave otherwise.”

Noah stared at her.

“He lied to me?”

“He was trying to save your life.”

Noah stepped back.

For seven years, he had carried guilt.

Seven years believing he had abandoned Amelia to protect her.

Now he realized something.

His father had protected him.

But he had also taken seven years of his son’s life.

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

Amelia moved beside him.

She gently held his hand.

“It’s okay.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It isn’t.”

He looked at her.

“I lost seven years because I believed I had to protect you.”

Amelia’s eyes softened.

“You came back.”

“But I should have come sooner.”

“You didn’t know.”

He looked at her.

“I know.”

They left the lighthouse at sunset.

Neither spoke during the drive.

When they reached the beach, Noah stopped the car.

“I need some air.”

Amelia followed him.

They walked toward the water.

The sun was disappearing beneath the horizon.

Noah sat on the sand.

Amelia sat beside him.

“I’m angry.”

“I know.”

“I’m angry at my father.”

“You have the right to be.”

“I’m angry at myself.”

“You shouldn’t be.”

“And I’m angry at the seven years we lost.”

Amelia looked at him.

“We can’t get them back.”

“I know.”

“But we can decide what happens next.”

Noah turned toward her.

“What do you want?”

She smiled.

“You.”

His eyes softened.

“That’s all?”

“That’s enough.”

He took her hand.

“I don’t deserve you.”

She shook her head.

“Don’t say that.”

“Why?”

“Because love isn’t about deserving.”

She leaned closer.

“It’s about choosing.”

Noah smiled.

“Then I choose you.”

“I choose you too.”

He kissed her.

This time there was no fear.

No hesitation.

No unfinished sentence.

Only two people finally allowing themselves to be happy.

Weeks passed.

Adrian was formally charged.

The evidence from Noah’s father’s company exposed the entire network.

Noah was finally free from the past that had followed him for years.

He decided to stay in the city.

Amelia continued working at the publishing house.

And Noah opened a small photography studio near the harbor.

On the first day of the studio opening, Amelia walked inside.

The walls were covered with photographs.

The sea.

The old bookstore.

The railway station.

The lighthouse.

And her.

So many photographs of her.

She smiled.

“You really do take too many pictures of me.”

Noah appeared behind her.

“I have a lot of catching up to do.”

She laughed.

“Seven years?”

“Maybe more.”

He handed her a small box.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a silver star necklace.

Amelia touched it.

“It’s beautiful.”

“The stars remember us.”

She looked at him.

“Do they?”

“They remember every wish.”

“And yours?”

He smiled.

“My wish already came true.”

That evening, Noah took Amelia to the train station.

The same place where they had once lost each other.

The platform was almost empty.

A gentle breeze moved through the station.

Amelia looked around.

“It feels strange being here.”

“Why?”

“Because I used to think this was where I lost you.”

Noah took her hand.

“It wasn’t.”

She looked at him.

“It was where our story paused.”

He reached into his pocket.

This time, there was no letter.

No secret.

No photograph.

Only a small ring.

Amelia’s eyes widened.

“Noah…”

He smiled.

“I know we already promised to choose each other.”

He took her hand.

“But I want to make another promise.”

He lowered himself onto one knee.

“I can’t give you back the seven years we lost.”

His voice trembled.

“But I can give you every year I have left.”

Tears filled Amelia’s eyes.

“Will you marry me?”

She laughed through her tears.

“Yes.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then she pulled him up and kissed him.

The station lights glowed above them.

For once, neither of them was waiting for someone to arrive.

They had arrived.

Together.

But as they walked away, Amelia noticed something inside the old station window.

A photograph.

It was the picture of them from when they were seventeen.

The same photograph Noah had kept for seven years.

Beneath it was a handwritten message.

Some stories are separated by time.

The best ones find their way back.

Amelia smiled.

She looked at Noah.

“Did you write that?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

She looked back at the photograph.

Then she smiled.

“Maybe the stars did.”

Noah wrapped an arm around her.

“Maybe.”

They walked into the night together.

And for the first time, there was no goodbye waiting at the end of the road.

Only tomorrow.

Only love.

Only them.

But their wedding was still one chapter away.

And tomorrow would bring the moment Amelia had dreamed about since she was seventeen.

The moment she would finally become Noah’s forever.
