The Secret Between Us

Chapter 3

The Secret Between Us

We Met Again · July 22, 2026

For the next three days, Zoya tried not to think about Ayaan.

She failed.

Every morning, she told herself that she would focus on work.

Every afternoon, she reminded herself that seven years had passed and she was no longer the same girl who had once loved him.

And every night, when the city became quiet and the lights outside her window disappeared one by one, she found herself thinking about the same question.

What if he was telling the truth?

What if Ayaan had never stopped loving her?

What if the person she had hated for seven years had actually been the person who had loved her the most?

And what if the story she had believed for all these years was nothing but a carefully constructed lie?

Zoya didn’t know what scared her more.

The possibility that Ayaan had lied…

Or the possibility that he hadn’t.

She was standing behind the counter at the bookstore when the bell above the door rang.

Her heart reacted before her eyes did.

She looked up.

Ayaan.

He was holding two cups of coffee.

Zoya stared at him.

“You came.”

Ayaan smiled slightly.

“You sound surprised.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“You said you wouldn’t ask me to come back.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then why are you here?”

He placed one of the coffee cups on the counter.

“Because you said you wanted to see me again.”

Zoya looked at the cup.

Then at him.

“I said that once.”

“Once was enough.”

She tried not to smile.

She failed.

Ayaan noticed.

His eyes softened.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“Your smile.”

Zoya immediately looked away.

“Don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t look at me like that.”

Ayaan became quiet.

“Like what?”

“Like you remember me.”

His smile disappeared.

“I remember everything.”

The words touched something deep inside her.

Zoya looked at him again.

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

“Even the bad things?”

“Especially the bad things.”

She didn’t know how to respond.

Ayaan leaned against the counter.

“I remember the first day I met you.”

“You do?”

“You spilled coffee on my shirt.”

Zoya’s eyes widened.

“That was you?”

Ayaan laughed.

“You don’t remember?”

“I thought you were someone else.”

“You didn’t even apologize.”

“I did.”

“You said, ‘You should have moved.'”

Zoya laughed.

“That sounds like me.”

“It does.”

For a moment, everything felt easy.

Natural.

Like seven years hadn’t happened.

Like they were twenty-three again.

Like they were two young people who had no idea how cruel life could be.

Zoya looked at him.

“Why did we have to meet again?”

Ayaan’s expression changed.

“Maybe we didn’t.”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe we were supposed to find each other.”

Her heart skipped.

“That’s a dangerous thing to believe.”

“Why?”

“Because if you believe in fate, then you have to believe that everything that happened was meant to happen.”

Ayaan looked at her.

“Maybe it wasn’t.”

“Then why?”

“Maybe we made mistakes.”

“That’s too simple.”

“Love is rarely simple.”

Zoya looked down at her coffee.

“Do you still believe in love?”

Ayaan didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“I believe in you.”

Her heart stopped.

“Ayaan…”

“I don’t know if I believe in forever anymore.”

His voice became quieter.

“But I know that when I saw you standing in this bookstore, seven years disappeared in a second.”

Zoya looked at him.

“That’s not love.”

“Then what is it?”

She didn’t know.

Maybe she did.

Maybe she was simply afraid to say it.

Ayaan moved closer.

“Zoya.”

“Yes?”

“If you could go back seven years…”

He paused.

“Would you still choose me?”

Zoya’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s not fair.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know who you are anymore.”

Ayaan nodded.

“Then let me show you.”

The words stayed with her long after he left.

A week passed.

And slowly, Ayaan became part of her days again.

Not in the way he had been before.

Not yet.

But he was there.

A message in the morning.

A cup of coffee waiting for her at the bookstore.

A short walk after work.

Sometimes they talked for hours.

Sometimes they sat together without saying anything.

Zoya discovered that Ayaan still hated crowded restaurants.

He still drank coffee without sugar.

He still read the last page of a book before buying it.

And he still looked at her when he thought she wasn’t paying attention.

Some things had changed.

But some things had stayed exactly the same.

One evening, Ayaan took her to the old rooftop where they had spent so many nights together.

Zoya stopped when she saw it.

The small lights.

The wooden bench.

The view of the city.

Everything looked different.

And yet…

Everything felt the same.

“You kept it.”

Ayaan looked at her.

“Kept what?”

“This place.”

“I don’t own it.”

“You know what I mean.”

He smiled.

“I came here sometimes.”

“Why?”

Ayaan looked at the city.

“Because this was the last place where I was happy before I lost you.”

Zoya’s heart tightened.

She walked toward the railing.

“Don’t say things like that.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know how to listen to them.”

Ayaan stood beside her.

“Then don’t listen.”

“How?”

“Just feel them.”

She looked at him.

He was watching the city.

The wind moved through his hair.

For a moment, she saw the boy she had loved.

Not the man who had broken her heart.

Not the stranger she had met again.

Just Ayaan.

Her Ayaan.

The boy who had once promised her forever.

“Ayaan.”

“Hmm?”

“Did you really think you were dying?”

He became still.

“Yes.”

“How long did you think you had?”

“Six months.”

Zoya’s eyes widened.

“Six months?”

He nodded.

“And you thought leaving me would make it easier?”

“I thought you would have time to heal.”

“Before you died?”

“Yes.”

She looked away.

“You were an idiot.”

“I know.”

“An unbelievable idiot.”

“I know.”

“I would have stayed.”

“I know that now.”

“No.”

She turned toward him.

“You should have known then.”

Ayaan looked at her.

“You were twenty-three.”

“So were you.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

His eyes softened.

“Zoya…”

She looked away.

“Do you know what I did after you left?”

Ayaan’s expression became serious.

“What?”

“I waited.”

He closed his eyes.

“For how long?”

“Three months.”

He looked at her.

“I waited for you to come back.”

Ayaan’s face changed.

“Every day,” she continued. “I thought you would realize that you made a mistake.”

Her voice began to shake.

“I thought you would come back and say you were sorry.”

Ayaan looked down.

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“You never called.”

“No.”

“You never wrote.”

“No.”

“You disappeared.”

“I know.”

“Then how could you say you loved me?”

Ayaan looked at her.

“Because loving you was the reason I disappeared.”

Zoya shook her head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It didn’t to me either.”

He took a deep breath.

“I was young. I was afraid. I believed I was dying. Your father told me that if I stayed with you, you would spend the last months of my life watching me suffer.”

Zoya’s eyes filled with tears.

“I could have handled it.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you let me?”

Ayaan’s voice broke.

“Because I loved you too much to watch you lose me.”

Zoya stared at him.

He looked away.

“I thought if you hated me, you would heal faster.”

A tear fell down her cheek.

“It didn’t work.”

Ayaan looked at her.

“Because you didn’t hate me?”

“No.”

She whispered:

“Because I hated myself.”

His face changed.

“For what?”

“For believing that I wasn’t enough.”

Ayaan immediately stepped toward her.

“Zoya.”

“You told me you never loved me.”

“I know.”

“You said I meant nothing.”

“I know.”

“I spent years wondering what was wrong with me.”

“There was nothing wrong with you.”

“I thought maybe I wasn’t beautiful enough.”

“Zoya.”

“Maybe I wasn’t interesting enough.”

“Stop.”

“Maybe you found someone better.”

“Stop.”

Ayaan’s voice broke.

He gently held her face between his hands.

Zoya froze.

His eyes were filled with tears.

“There was never anyone else.”

She couldn’t breathe.

“Never.”

His thumb moved gently across her cheek.

“I didn’t leave because you weren’t enough.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“I left because I thought I wasn’t going to be enough for you for long.”

Zoya’s tears fell.

Ayaan wiped them away.

“You spent years believing you were not enough for me, while I spent those same years believing I had ruined the only person who ever made me feel like I was enough.”

Zoya closed her eyes.

His hands were still on her face.

For a few seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Ayaan whispered:

“Tell me to let you go.”

She opened her eyes.

“I can’t.”

His breath caught.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want you to.”

Something changed between them.

The distance that had existed for seven years suddenly felt smaller.

Ayaan slowly leaned closer.

Zoya’s heart began to race.

He stopped.

Only inches away.

“Zoya.”

“Yes?”

“If I kiss you…”

He hesitated.

“Will you regret it?”

She looked into his eyes.

“Maybe.”

“Then I won’t.”

Her heart broke a little.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to be another regret in your life.”

Zoya stared at him.

Then she whispered:

“What if I want you to?”

Ayaan’s eyes searched hers.

“Are you sure?”

She nodded.

And then he kissed her.

It wasn’t like their first kiss.

That kiss had been young.

Careless.

Full of excitement.

This one was different.

It was slow.

Careful.

Almost afraid.

As if both of them knew how easily something beautiful could break.

Zoya closed her eyes.

For one moment, the past disappeared.

There was no betrayal.

No seven years.

No lies.

Only him.

Only her.

Only the love they had left behind.

When they finally pulled apart, Zoya rested her forehead against his.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“I hate you.”

Ayaan smiled.

“No, you don’t.”

She almost laughed.

“You still say that.”

“Because it’s still true.”

She opened her eyes.

“Don’t make me fall in love with you again.”

His smile faded.

“Zoya…”

“Promise me.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I think you already are.”

She stared at him.

And deep inside her heart, she knew he was right.

The next morning, Zoya woke up with a strange feeling.

Something was wrong.

She couldn’t explain it.

She went to the bookstore early.

Maya was already there.

But the moment Zoya saw her face, she knew.

“What happened?”

Maya looked nervous.

“Nothing.”

Zoya stared at her.

“Don’t lie to me.”

Maya looked away.

“Zoya…”

“What?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

Maya took a deep breath.

“About Ayaan.”

Zoya’s heart immediately tightened.

“What about him?”

Maya reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old envelope.

Zoya recognized it immediately.

It was the same type of envelope Ayaan had given her.

“Where did you get that?”

Maya looked at her.

“From my mother.”

Zoya frowned.

“Why would your mother have something related to Ayaan?”

Maya didn’t answer.

“Tell me.”

Maya’s hands began to shake.

“Seven years ago…”

She stopped.

Zoya waited.

“Seven years ago, I found out something.”

“What?”

Maya looked at her with tears in her eyes.

“I knew Ayaan was planning to leave you.”

Zoya froze.

“What?”

“I knew.”

“How?”

Maya looked down.

“Because I was there.”

Zoya stepped backward.

“What do you mean?”

“I was there when your father met Ayaan.”

The world seemed to stop.

Zoya stared at her best friend.

“You?”

Maya nodded.

“Why?”

“I didn’t know what he was going to do.”

“Then why were you there?”

Maya’s tears began to fall.

“Because your father asked me to bring Ayaan to him.”

Zoya couldn’t breathe.

“You knew?”

“Not everything.”

“But you knew he was leaving.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

Maya looked at her.

“Your father.”

Zoya’s entire body went cold.

“Why?”

Maya opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

Zoya took it.

Her hands trembled.

The photograph showed three people.

Her father.

Ayaan.

And someone else.

Zoya stared at the third person.

Her blood ran cold.

Because she knew her.

She knew her very well.

It was her father’s closest business partner.

But why?

Why had she been there?

And why was Ayaan looking at her with such fear?

Zoya looked at Maya.

“What is this?”

Maya’s voice broke.

“The medical report Ayaan saw…”

She paused.

“It was fake.”

Zoya’s heart stopped.

“What?”

Maya nodded.

“Your father didn’t create it.”

Zoya stared at her.

“Then who did?”

Maya looked at the photograph.

And whispered:

“Your father’s business partner.”

Zoya felt as if the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.

“Why?”

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Then tell me!”

“I don’t know!”

Maya began to cry.

“I swear I don’t know everything.”

Zoya looked at the photograph again.

There was something written on the back.

A date.

And beneath it…

A name.

Ayaan.

Her heart started pounding.

“Why would she be involved?”

Maya didn’t answer.

Zoya suddenly remembered something.

Something Ayaan had said.

There was never anyone else.

She looked at the photograph again.

Then she realized something.

The woman standing beside her father wasn’t just his business partner.

She was also the mother of the man Ayaan had once called his closest friend.

And that man…

Was the person Ayaan had trusted after leaving Zoya.

The person who had convinced him that Zoya had moved on.

The person who had sent Ayaan a message years later telling him:

“She doesn’t remember you anymore.”

Zoya’s heart began to race.

“What happened seven years ago?”

Maya looked at her.

“Zoya…”

“What happened?”

Maya’s lips trembled.

“Your father didn’t want you to marry Ayaan.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Maya shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“He didn’t just want to separate you.”

Zoya stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Maya looked directly into her eyes.

“He wanted Ayaan gone.”

Silence.

Zoya couldn’t move.

“Why?”

Maya whispered:

“Because Ayaan knew something about your father’s business.”

Zoya’s eyes widened.

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what does this have to do with me?”

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Zoya looked down at the photograph.

There was a final line written on the back.

A sentence.

One that made her heart stop.

“If Ayaan tells Zoya the truth, everything will be destroyed.”

Zoya’s hands began to tremble.

Seven years ago…

Someone had been afraid of the truth.

Someone had destroyed their love to keep a secret hidden.

And now Ayaan had returned.

He was telling her everything.

Which meant the secret he had been forced to carry…

Was finally coming back to life.

Zoya immediately reached for her phone.

She called Ayaan.

Once.

No answer.

Twice.

No answer.

Three times.

Still nothing.

Her heart began to panic.

Then her phone rang.

Ayaan.

She answered immediately.

“Ayaan!”

Silence.

“Ayaan, where are you?”

There was breathing on the other end.

Then a man’s voice.

Not Ayaan’s.

Zoya froze.

“Who is this?”

The man laughed softly.

“You should have left the past alone.”

Zoya’s blood ran cold.

“Where is Ayaan?”

“You really don’t remember me?”

She couldn’t speak.

Then she recognized the voice.

Ayaan’s old friend.

The man who had supposedly helped him after he left.

Her voice shook.

“What have you done?”

The line went silent.

Then he said:

“Ask your father.”

The call ended.

Zoya stood frozen.

Maya grabbed her hand.

“What happened?”

Zoya looked at her.

“Ayaan.”

“What?”

“Something happened to him.”

Her voice broke.

And somewhere across the city, Ayaan stood in an empty parking garage.

His phone was lying on the ground.

The man standing in front of him was holding a photograph.

The same photograph Zoya had just seen.

“You should have stayed away from her,” the man said.

Ayaan looked at him.

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“If you touch her—”

“You still don’t understand.”

The man stepped closer.

“After seven years, you’re finally going to tell her the truth?”

Ayaan’s eyes became cold.

“Yes.”

“You’ll destroy everything.”

Ayaan smiled bitterly.

“Everything was destroyed seven years ago.”

The man stared at him.

Ayaan picked up his phone.

“I lost her once.”

He looked directly into the man’s eyes.

“I’m not losing her again.”

“There are some people you can lose once and survive. But when life gives you a second chance with them, you realize that losing them a second time would destroy the person you became without them.”

Ayaan walked away.

But he didn’t know that Zoya was already searching for him.

And Zoya didn’t know that the truth she had been searching for was far more dangerous than she had imagined.

Because seven years ago…

Their love had not simply been destroyed by a lie.

Someone had planned it.

Someone had benefited from their separation.

And now that Ayaan and Zoya had found each other again…

That person was terrified.

Because this time…

They were no longer two young people who could be easily separated.

This time, they were ready to fight.

Together.
