When Your Heart Remembers

Chapter 4

When Your Heart Remembers

We Met Again · July 22, 2026

Zoya had never been this afraid.

Not when Ayaan had left her.

Not when she had spent months crying herself to sleep.

Not even when she had learned to live with the idea that the love of her life was gone forever.

This fear was different.

Because this time, she had something to lose again.

Ayaan.

She stood in the middle of the bookstore with her phone pressed against her ear, listening to the silence after the call had ended.

Her hands were shaking.

Maya was standing beside her.

“Zoya…”

“He’s in trouble.”

“How do you know?”

“That was Ayaan’s old friend.”

Maya’s face went pale.

“The one in the photograph?”

Zoya nodded.

“He asked me to ask my father about the truth.”

Maya looked confused.

“What truth?”

“I don’t know.”

Zoya stared at the phone screen.

She called Ayaan again.

Nothing.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Then she sent him a message.

Where are you? Please answer me.

She waited.

One minute.

Two.

Five.

No response.

Zoya’s heart felt like it was being squeezed.

She had spent seven years without him.

She had convinced herself that she could survive losing him.

But now that he was back…

The thought of losing him again was unbearable.

She grabbed her bag.

“I’m going to my father’s house.”

Maya immediately stopped her.

“Zoya, wait.”

“For what?”

“You don’t know what you’re walking into.”

“I don’t care.”

“You should.”

Zoya looked at her.

“Seven years ago, someone destroyed my life.”

Her voice was shaking.

“This time, I’m going to find out who.”

The drive to her father’s house felt endless.

Every red light seemed to last forever.

Every second without Ayaan felt like a lifetime.

She kept looking at her phone.

Nothing.

No call.

No message.

Nothing.

Finally, she reached the large white house where she had grown up.

The house looked exactly the same.

The same iron gate.

The same garden.

The same old tree near the entrance.

But Zoya didn’t feel like the same girl who had once lived there.

She walked inside.

Her father was sitting in the living room.

He looked up.

The moment he saw her face, something changed in his expression.

“Zoya?”

“Where is Ayaan?”

Her father’s face became completely still.

That was enough.

Zoya immediately knew.

He knew.

“You know something.”

Her father slowly stood.

“What are you talking about?”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“Zoya—”

“Where is Ayaan?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

Her father frowned.

“You don’t speak to me like that.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

“I don’t know where that boy is.”

“His name is Ayaan.”

“I know his name.”

“Then why did you destroy us?”

Her father’s expression changed.

For a moment, there was something like regret in his eyes.

Then it disappeared.

“I did what was best for you.”

Zoya laughed.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

It was the kind of laugh that came when someone had finally heard the most painful lie too many times.

“Best for me?”

“Yes.”

“You lied to him.”

“I protected you.”

“You made him believe he was dying!”

Her father’s face went pale.

Zoya froze.

The silence told her everything.

“You did.”

Her father looked away.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I know about the medical report.”

Her father’s eyes immediately returned to hers.

Zoya stepped closer.

“It was fake.”

He said nothing.

“Wasn’t it?”

Still nothing.

“Answer me!”

Her father’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.”

Zoya felt like the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.

She had expected denial.

She had expected anger.

She had expected anything.

But not the truth.

She took a step backward.

“Why?”

Her father closed his eyes.

“Because you were young.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“He wasn’t right for you.”

“That’s still not an answer.”

“I thought he would ruin your life.”

“By loving me?”

Her father looked at her.

“By taking you away from me.”

Zoya stared at him.

“What?”

“He was going to take you away.”

“So you destroyed us?”

“I thought you would understand one day.”

“I will never understand.”

Her father looked tired.

“Zoya, you don’t know what happened before you met him.”

“Then tell me.”

He remained silent.

“Tell me!”

“Your mother…”

He stopped.

Zoya’s heart skipped.

“What about Mom?”

Her father looked at her.

“She knew.”

Zoya froze.

“Knew what?”

“Everything.”

Her mother’s name had not been spoken in that house for years.

Zoya’s mother had died when she was young.

She remembered her as a warm smile.

A soft voice.

A woman who had always told her that love was the most beautiful thing in the world.

“Mom knew about Ayaan?”

Her father nodded.

“She knew I wanted you to leave him.”

“And she agreed?”

“No.”

Zoya stared at him.

“Then what happened?”

Her father looked away.

“She told me I was making a mistake.”

“She was right.”

“She said you had the right to choose your own life.”

Zoya’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why did you still do it?”

Her father didn’t answer.

Zoya suddenly understood.

“You fought with her.”

He remained silent.

“You fought with Mom because of me.”

“Zoya…”

“What happened?”

Her father’s voice became low.

“She threatened to leave.”

Zoya’s heart broke.

“What?”

“She said she would take you and go.”

“Why?”

“Because she didn’t agree with what I was doing.”

Zoya’s tears fell.

“And then?”

Her father looked at the floor.

“She died.”

Zoya stopped breathing.

For years, she had believed her mother’s death was an accident.

A tragic accident.

But now…

“Was it really an accident?”

Her father looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“Then why do you look afraid?”

Her father’s face changed.

Zoya stepped closer.

“What happened the night she died?”

“Nothing.”

“Tell me!”

“Enough!”

His voice echoed through the room.

Zoya stepped back.

Her father was breathing heavily.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother was going to tell someone.”

“Tell someone what?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know!”

Zoya stared at him.

Then she remembered the photograph.

The woman standing beside him.

His business partner.

Her heart began to race.

“Was she involved?”

Her father froze.

Zoya knew.

“She was.”

“No.”

“She was.”

“Zoya, stop.”

“She was involved in everything.”

“No.”

“You used her.”

“She helped me.”

Zoya’s eyes widened.

“Helped you?”

Her father looked away.

“She arranged the medical report.”

The room became silent.

Zoya could barely breathe.

“Why?”

“Because I asked her to.”

“Why would she do that?”

Her father didn’t answer.

“Why?”

Finally, he said:

“Because she loved me.”

Zoya froze.

“What?”

Her father closed his eyes.

“She wanted me.”

Zoya stared at him.

“All these years…”

She shook her head.

“You destroyed my love because another woman wanted you?”

“No.”

“Yes!”

“She was not the only reason.”

“Then what was?”

Her father looked at her.

“Your mother’s death.”

Zoya went completely still.

“What does Mom have to do with Ayaan?”

“Everything.”

Ayaan woke up in a dark room.

His head hurt.

His hands were free.

He slowly sat up.

The room was empty except for a table and a chair.

On the table was a photograph.

He recognized it immediately.

Zoya.

Seven years ago.

She was smiling.

Ayaan stared at it.

For a moment, the pain disappeared.

He remembered her laughter.

The way she used to say his name.

The way she would fall asleep while talking to him on the phone.

The way she used to hold his hand whenever she was nervous.

He closed his eyes.

“I thought losing you once was the greatest pain I would ever know. Then you came back, and I discovered something worse—the fear of losing you again.”

The door opened.

Ayaan looked up.

Her father’s business partner walked inside.

Ayaan immediately stood.

“Where is Zoya?”

The woman ignored him.

“You should never have come back.”

“Where is she?”

“She’s safe.”

“For now.”

Ayaan’s eyes became cold.

“If you touch her—”

“I won’t.”

“Then why am I here?”

“Because you know too much.”

Ayaan stared at her.

“What happened seven years ago?”

She looked away.

“Nothing.”

“Don’t lie.”

“You should be grateful.”

“For what?”

“That you survived.”

Ayaan froze.

“What does that mean?”

She turned toward him.

“Do you really think that medical report was the only lie?”

Ayaan’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“Your illness was fake.”

“I know.”

“You don’t know anything.”

“Then tell me.”

She smiled bitterly.

“Seven years ago, your family and Zoya’s family were connected.”

Ayaan frowned.

“How?”

“Business.”

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

“Your father was involved in a deal with Zoya’s father.”

Ayaan’s expression changed.

“What deal?”

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy both families.”

Ayaan stared at her.

“And Zoya?”

“She knew nothing.”

“Then why involve her?”

“Because her father needed to protect himself.”

Ayaan stepped forward.

“From what?”

The woman looked at him.

“From your father.”

Ayaan froze.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“Your father knew about the illegal money.”

Ayaan felt his blood run cold.

“No.”

“He was going to expose everything.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your father was going to the police.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

The woman smiled.

“Because he died.”

Silence.

Ayaan stared at her.

“My father died in an accident.”

“That’s what they told you.”

Ayaan stepped back.

“No.”

“Your father was killed.”

The world stopped.

Ayaan could barely breathe.

“By whom?”

The woman looked at him.

“Zoya’s father.”

Ayaan’s face turned pale.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Ask Zoya.”

Ayaan shook his head.

“No.”

“She deserves to know.”

“Where is she?”

The woman smiled.

“At home.”

Ayaan immediately turned toward the door.

“You can’t leave.”

“Try stopping me.”

He reached for the door.

Then she spoke.

“There’s one more thing.”

Ayaan stopped.

“What?”

The woman’s voice became quiet.

“Zoya’s father didn’t only kill your father.”

Ayaan slowly turned around.

“What are you saying?”

She looked at him.

“He killed her mother too.”

Ayaan’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

“Because she knew the truth.”

Ayaan couldn’t speak.

The woman continued:

“Your father and Zoya’s mother were going to expose him.”

Ayaan felt sick.

“Then why did you help him?”

The woman looked away.

“Because I loved him.”

Ayaan stared at her.

“And you destroyed two families for a man who never loved you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought he would.”

Ayaan’s voice became cold.

“Did he?”

She didn’t answer.

Ayaan understood.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“He never loved you.”

The words broke her.

Ayaan walked away.

But before he reached the door, she said:

“There’s something else.”

He stopped.

“The person who told me to bring you here…”

Ayaan turned.

“Who?”

She looked directly at him.

“Your father’s closest friend.”

Ayaan’s face changed.

“He’s alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Ayaan suddenly remembered something.

The old photograph.

The date.

The name.

The man who had been standing behind his father.

He finally understood.

The person who had separated him from Zoya wasn’t one person.

It was a chain of lies.

And somewhere at the center of it…

Was a man who had been hiding for seven years.

Zoya ran out of her father’s house.

She couldn’t breathe.

She needed Ayaan.

She needed answers.

She needed to know if he was safe.

She called him again.

Nothing.

She called Maya.

No answer.

She didn’t know where to go.

So she went to the only place that made sense.

The rooftop.

The place where their love had once begun.

The place where she had kissed him for the first time.

The place where she had promised him forever.

And the place where she had finally realized…

She had never stopped loving him.

She stood beside the railing.

Rain began to fall.

Again.

“Zoya.”

She turned.

Ayaan.

He was standing there.

Alive.

Her heart stopped.

“Ayaan.”

She ran toward him.

He caught her.

And she held him.

For the first time in seven years.

She didn’t care about the past.

She didn’t care about the lies.

She didn’t care about the questions.

She only cared that he was there.

Ayaan held her tightly.

His face buried in her hair.

“You’re okay.”

She was crying.

“You’re okay.”

“Yes.”

“I thought…”

“I know.”

She pulled away.

“What happened?”

Ayaan looked at her.

“I found out the truth.”

“So did I.”

His eyes widened.

“About our parents?”

Zoya nodded.

She looked at him.

“Your father.”

Ayaan became still.

“Zoya…”

“My father says he didn’t kill him.”

Ayaan’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“He says someone else did.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Ayaan looked away.

Zoya held his hand.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“My mother knew.”

Ayaan stared at her.

“She knew about everything.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Zoya’s voice broke.

“But she was trying to tell someone.”

Ayaan looked at her.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

They stood silently in the rain.

Then Ayaan noticed something.

A small necklace around Zoya’s neck.

He had seen it before.

Seven years ago.

Her mother had given it to her.

“Where did you get that?”

Zoya touched it.

“My mother.”

“Can I see it?”

She took it off.

Ayaan turned it over.

There was a small mark on the back.

A symbol.

His father’s initials.

Ayaan froze.

“What?”

Zoya looked at him.

“What’s wrong?”

Ayaan stared at the necklace.

“Your mother gave you this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The day before she died.”

Ayaan looked at her.

“Zoya…”

“What?”

“This belonged to my father.”

Silence.

“What?”

“My father had the same symbol.”

Zoya’s eyes widened.

Ayaan turned the necklace over.

There was a tiny hidden compartment.

He opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Zoya’s hands began to shake.

“What’s that?”

Ayaan carefully removed it.

The paper was old.

Very old.

He unfolded it.

There was only one sentence.

Ayaan read it.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

He looked at Zoya.

“It’s from your mother.”

“What does it say?”

Ayaan handed her the paper.

Zoya read the words.

And her heart stopped.

“If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found its way back to the two people who were never supposed to be separated.”

Zoya looked at Ayaan.

There was more.

“Ayaan and Zoya, your fathers’ secrets are not the reason you were separated. The real reason is much closer to you than you think.”

Zoya’s hands trembled.

Ayaan read the final line.

“Trust no one—not even the person who claims to love you the most.”

The rain became heavier.

Zoya looked at Ayaan.

“Who could it be?”

Ayaan stared at her.

“I don’t know.”

Then they heard footsteps.

Both turned.

Someone was standing at the entrance of the rooftop.

A shadow.

A familiar voice came through the rain.

“Zoya.”

Her heart stopped.

She knew that voice.

Ayaan’s hand immediately found hers.

The person stepped forward.

Zoya’s eyes widened.

It was Maya.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was the man from the photograph.

The man who had supposedly disappeared seven years ago.

Ayaan’s face turned pale.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“My father’s best friend.”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Ayaan.”

Zoya looked at him.

“Who are you?”

The man’s smile disappeared.

“I was the last person to see your mother alive.”

Zoya stopped breathing.

Ayaan tightened his grip on her hand.

The man looked at them.

“You finally found each other again.”

He smiled.

“Unfortunately…”

His eyes became cold.

“You found each other too soon.”

“Sometimes the greatest threat to love is not distance, not time, and not even heartbreak. Sometimes it is the truth that two people discover at exactly the wrong moment.”

Ayaan stepped in front of Zoya.

“Stay behind me.”

The man laughed.

“Still protecting her?”

Ayaan’s voice became cold.

“Always.”

Zoya held his hand.

“No.”

Ayaan looked at her.

She stepped beside him.

“Not this time.”

He stared at her.

Zoya looked at the man.

“If you know the truth…”

Her voice was shaking, but her eyes were strong.

“Then tell us everything.”

The man smiled.

And for the first time…

Maya began to cry.

Because she knew the truth.

She had known it for seven years.

And now…

There was nowhere left to hide.

The man looked at Zoya.

“Your mother didn’t die in an accident.”

Zoya’s heart stopped.

Ayaan held her hand tighter.

The man continued.

“She was murdered.”

Zoya’s eyes filled with tears.

“By whom?”

The man looked at her.

Then at Maya.

And finally…

At Ayaan.

“The person who ordered her death…”

He paused.

“…was someone you both loved.”

The world went silent.

Zoya looked at Ayaan.

Ayaan looked at her.

And suddenly, they both understood.

Their love story had never been about two people who simply lost each other.

It had been about two families.

Two secrets.

Two deaths.

And a truth that had waited seven years to come back.

But whatever happened next…

They would face it together.

Because this time, they had something they didn’t have seven years ago.

Each other.

“We lost seven years because we were forced to believe that love was our weakness. But now I know the truth—loving you was never what destroyed us. It was the only thing that gave us the courage to find our way back.”

And as the rain fell around them…

Zoya finally understood.

They had met again for a reason.

Not to repeat their past.

But to finally uncover it.

Together.
