Three months had passed since Kai and Aria had first met in the university library.

What had started as a simple friendship had slowly become something neither of them knew how to describe.

If Kai went to the library, Aria was usually sitting across from him.

Professor Morgan handed them a list of locations.

One place caught Kai’s attention.

His home village.

There was a protected reef near the coast where his father had spent years diving.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

He pointed to the page.

“This is near my village.”

Her eyes widened.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Then we should go there.”

Kai looked at her.

“You actually want to?”

“I’ve wanted to see your village since you told me about it.”

He smiled.

“Okay.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Then we’re going.”

“You talk about me?”

“Sometimes.”

“Mama!”

“I feel honored.”

Kai shook his head.

“This is already embarrassing.”

Daniel placed a hand on his son’s shoulder.

“Come on. Your mother has been preparing food since morning.”

She listened to Daniel’s stories.

Daniel brought out an old wooden box.

“This is where I kept the pearl before selling it.”

Aria looked at it carefully.

“You still have the box?”

Daniel nodded.

“The pearl is gone.”

He looked toward Lia.

“But the memory isn’t.”

Lia smiled.

Kai had heard the story many times.

But watching Aria listen to it made the old story feel new.

After dinner, Kai and Aria walked outside.

The moonlight covered the sea.

“Your parents are wonderful,” Aria said.

“They liked you.”

“Really?”

“My mother definitely did.”

Aria laughed.

“And your father?”

“He approved.”

“How do you know?”

“He told me.”

She smiled.

They walked toward the beach.

Neither spoke for a while.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For bringing me here.”

Kai looked at her.

“I wanted you to see where I came from.”

“I did.”

“And?”

She looked toward the sea.

“I understand you better now.”

Kai smiled.

“How?”

“You love this place.”

“Yes.”

“More than the city.”

“Much more.”

She looked at him.

“I think I could love it too.”

Kai’s heart skipped.

He wanted to tell her how much that sentence meant to him.

But the words wouldn’t come.

The next morning, Kai and Aria began their research.

They spent hours studying the coral reef.

Kai showed her different marine species.

Aria took photographs and wrote notes.

At one point, they sat on a large rock overlooking the water.

Aria looked at him.

“You know something?”

“What?”

“You’re different here.”

“How?”

“You smile more.”

Kai laughed.

“My mother says the same thing.”

Aria smiled.

“I like this version of you.”

He looked at her.

“What version?”

“The one who isn’t worried about everything.”

Kai became quiet.

Aria looked away.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“I know.”

They stared at the sea.

“Aria?”

“Yes?”

“Do you ever think about what happens after graduation?”

“Sometimes.”

“Where do you want to go?”

She thought about it.

“Somewhere near the ocean.”

Kai smiled.

“That’s good.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t imagine living far from it.”

She looked at him.

“Maybe we won’t have to.”

The words hung between them.

For a moment, the world seemed completely still.

Kai looked into her eyes.

She didn’t look away.

He moved slightly closer.

Aria’s breathing became slower.

Then a loud voice came from behind them.

“Kai!”

They jumped apart.

It was Daniel.

“Your mother wants you.”

Kai sighed.

“Coming!”

Aria covered her mouth to hide her laughter.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

They walked back toward the house.

But something had changed.

Neither of them could pretend otherwise.

“So what are we?”

Kai looked at the ocean.

“That’s not very romantic.”

He laughed.

“I’ve never been good at romance.”

“Then learn.”

He looked at her.

“With you?”

“Maybe.”

Aria rested her head against his shoulder.

They sat quietly.

His father’s voice sounded different.

Serious.

“Kai, you need to come home.”

“Why?”

“There has been an accident.”

Kai’s heart dropped.

“What happened?”

Daniel was silent for a moment.

“Your mother…”

Kai stopped breathing.

“What happened to Mama?”

The call ended before Daniel could explain.

Kai looked toward Aria.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

“Kai?”

He grabbed his bag.

“We have to go.”

“Why?”

“My mother.”

Aria stood.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked terrified.

“Something happened to her.”

Together, they rushed toward the village.

And for the first time since their friendship had begun, Kai realized that love was not only about beautiful moments.
