The bus seemed to move slower than ever.

Kai sat beside Aria, staring through the window without seeing anything.

“We have,” Aria said.

Daniel became quiet.

“I thought about my family.”

He looked at Lia.

He looked at Aria.

“What was that?”

Daniel rushed out of the house.

“Stay here!”

A fishing boat had broken loose from its ropes.

Several villagers ran toward the harbor.

“Stay with Mama.”

She grabbed his arm.

“Where are you going?”

“I have to help.”

“Kai, the sea is dangerous.”

“I know.”

“Please don’t.”

He looked at her.

“I’ll come back.”

Then he ran into the storm.

Aria stood frozen.

She had never been so afraid.

The ocean that had always been part of Kai’s family was now raging before her.

And as the waves crashed against the shore, she realized that loving Kai meant learning to live with the danger that had always surrounded his life.
